The NT is filled with some incredibly amazing hiking trails! We have highlighted some of the best as well as some more exclusive ones to experience.
Depending on the adventure you are up for, you are guaranteed incredible waterfalls and freshwater springs to dive into, as well as beautiful escarpment and historic paintings to explore.
Hike at your leisure or arrange a booking with our local rangers and tour guides!
Enjoy a 1km circular walk around Ubirr, exploring the iconic rock art sites which feature important food animals. Find stories of behaviour and law told at the Mabuyu, Narmarrkan Sisters and Rainbow Serpent paintings.
Once you have taken in the cultural significance and history on your walk, venture the 250m climb up the escarpment to enjoy vast views of the flood plains, woodlands and rainforest.
Best enjoyed at sunset as the calls of the Kookaburra’s let everyone know they are home for the evening!
At Yurmikmik walks, there are a number of circuits to self-explore in this region of the Top End! Opting for a shorter route, you can enjoy a 2km stroll around Boulder Creek! Where fruit doves and spangled drongos call home.
Or if you’re up for a bit more of a challenge, the look out walk is a 5km trek where you can take in the view over the South Alligator catchment and the southern hills and ridges!
The Motor Car falls track in a pleasant 7.5km return loop which takes you through the southern hills and ridges. Keep an eye out for wallabies, red-tailed black cockatoos, azure kingfishers and many more amazing birdlife!
As you traverse through the monsoonal rainforest you will reach a beautiful natural pool, Motor Car Falls, to enjoy a plunge into!
If you are wanting to explore a hidden gem in Nitmuluk National Park, the 9kn return trek to the Southern Rockhole is sure a treat. This self-walk takes you along the Katherine Gorge, up and down the escarpment and through monsoonal rainforest.
As you reach the rockhole, you will be immersed in a beautiful natural blue pool! Crystal clear and prefect to plunge into to refresh and enjoy a self-packed lunch by!
Hiker’s far and wide come to the Territory for this well-known trek, The Jatbula Trail! This is not for the faint-hearted as it is a 5 day trek with 60km of Nitmuluk National Park to cover.
On the journey you are travelling along an ancient Song Line used by the Jawoyn people. This trail takes you through changing escarpment with monsoon forest, rocky outcrops and ancient rock art to admire along the way.
Throughout the trip you will camp alongside fabulous waterfalls and waterholes, as each afternoon brings about a different pool or spa to sit back and relax in!
